✓Generous cleanup allowance. Consider a smaller starting size to reduce material cost and machining time.
Cleanup Guidelines
Hot Finished Bar
Minimum 0.125" per side cleanup recommended due to surface scale and decarburization. OD tolerance typically +/- 0.010" to 0.025".
Cold Finished Bar
Minimum 0.030" per side for most applications. Better surface finish allows tighter cleanup. OD tolerance typically +0.000" / -0.002".
ASTM A519 Seamless Tube
OD: 0.062" minimum cleanup. ID: 0.062" minimum for boring. Wall tolerance varies by size - consult specification for exact values.
DOM Tube (A513 Type 5)
Tighter tolerances than seamless. Minimum 0.030" cleanup typically sufficient. Excellent for hydraulic cylinder applications.
Quench & Tempered Material
Allow extra cleanup (0.010-0.020") to remove any decarburized layer from heat treatment. Verify hardness after final machining.
Cost Optimization
Balance material cost vs machining time. Less cleanup = lower material cost but requires tighter tolerances on raw material.
